Hello. Rat problem..

I hope this community is active enough to get my question answered! Here goes.

So a friend of mine dropped off a young, but not quite a baby rat around Christmas as a present to me. He's still not quite fully grown yet, and he's pretty hyper for a rat (most of the rats I've had have been lazy bums).

The problem is, I bought a 25 dollar "hamster ball", except it was the big kind meant for rats and other bigger rodents. I also have a normal sized hamster ball for my actual hamster. So I have two. Anyway, I just can NOT get him to actually move in it. I've tried putting him in both since he's still small enough to fit okay in the hamster ball, thinking maybe the bigger one was too heavy for him to move in, but nothing I can think of helps. He just refuses to move, apparently thinking that once inside, he's trapped and can't go anywhere.

I've tried nudging him carefully so he realizes the ball isn't stationary, but that doesn't help. I don't know what else to try, I really want him to be able to run around my room with me while I'm cleaning, and it's good exercise, but for now he just sits there. Can you please give me some advice? Or is it hopeless? My hamster uses his hamster ball just fine, so I know it's not the balls themselves..
